Building trust, together.

The Ermine Exchange is a community-first initiative on Lincoln’s Ermine estate, created to bridge a long-standing gap in access to services, support and shared space. Backed by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and led by Alive Church in collaboration with Lincoln City Council and Bishop Grosseteste University, the project delivers a new wellbeing hub, localised support services, and targeted youth provision, all embedded within the estate and shaped by the people it serves. At its heart sits a welcoming community café, a warm, familiar place that encourages people to drop in, connect and find out what’s on.

  • Services exist for the Ermine, but none of them truly live there. For too long, local residents have had to travel out of their community for even the most essential support. What’s missing isn’t just provision, it’s continuity, familiarity and trust. Our challenge was to brand a place that belongs to everyone on the Ermine, one that feels credible, clear and quietly radical in how it listens and responds to the people it exists for. The coffee shop became a vital anchor point, a relaxed, low-barrier space where connections can begin.

  • Our focus was to keep things local, approachable and rooted in the real. Through deep conversations with partners and community voices, we developed a brand strategy designed to earn trust, not demand it. The Ermine Exchange had to feel useful, honest and grounded, never preachy or disconnected. We positioned it as a permanent presence with a flexible face, responsive to the needs of the estate and focused on making everyday life that bit easier, lighter and better. The café serves as a soft starting point, offering comfort, connection and calm for anyone walking through the door.

  • The Ermine Exchange identity is designed to be quiet, confident and deeply usable. More community noticeboard than billboard. A warm, accessible typographic system sits at the core, built for clarity and legibility across digital and physical touchpoints. Neutral, natural tones reflect the grounded character of the estate and create a welcoming environment for all age groups. Organic, repeating patterns add visual texture and subtle movement without overwhelming. The brand was designed to adapt, chamelonic in nature, feeling just as appropriate on a coffee loyalty card as it does on signage or community flyers. Every element helps lower the barrier to entry and invite people in, without ever asking too much of them.

  • Still in its early phases, the brand has already helped establish credibility and visibility across key local and civic stakeholders. The Ermine Exchange is now an active, working space, hosting services, social connection and youth activities. The café is already proving to be more than just a coffee stop. It’s the entry point to deeper engagement and shared belonging. The project now stands as a model for community-driven regeneration with real potential to be replicated elsewhere.
